Engine Technologies

Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shutoff (ADFSO)

Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shutoff (ADFSO) deactivates the fuel injectors when the vehicle is decelerating or coasting while maintaining normal engine operation. This system promotes efficiency by reducing fuel consumption during these periods.

System Details:

  • The system is automatic and requires no interaction from the driver.
  • Uses the transmission to keep the engine running at low operating levels whenever possible.
  • Normal fuel delivery resumes when the vehicle reaches a low speed or when the driver accelerates.
  • Excellent drivability is maintained by software that integrates this technology with powertrain operation.

Fail-Safe Engine Cooling System

The Fail-Safe Engine Cooling System is designed to help protect the engine from potential damage due to the loss of coolant, allowing the driver to travel a short distance to obtain service or reach a service facility.

More Details:

  • If the engine overheats, it will switch from normal all-cylinder operation to alternating-cylinder operation.
  • The non-powered cylinders act as air pumps to help cool the powered cylinders.
  • The vehicle will continue to operate with limited engine power, and the air conditioning system will be disabled.
  • Driving distance is limited by factors such as vehicle load, outside temperature, and road conditions.

Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor

The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor calculates oil change service intervals based on actual vehicle use, operating conditions, and time since the last oil service.

System Details:

  • A message will appear in the Information Display indicating when it’s time for an oil change.
  • "CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON" will appear when engine oil life remaining is 10% or less.
  • "ENGINE OIL CHANGE DUE" or "OIL CHANGE REQUIRED" will appear when oil life reaches 0%.
  • The oil change should be performed within two weeks or 500 miles of the "ENGINE OIL CHANGE DUE" or "OIL CHANGE REQUIRED" message appearing.
  • Conditions that could accelerate an oil change interval include towing, short-distance driving, extended idle duration, and driving in extreme temperatures.
  • The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor must be reset after each oil change.
  • Failure to perform scheduled maintenance as specified in the Scheduled Maintenance Guide may invalidate warranty coverage on parts affected by the lack of maintenance.

Engineering Insights

Dual Air Box Induction System

What It Is:
  • The dual air box induction system is standard on all Mustang 5.0L engines.
  • The air filter is isolated from the engine compartment and allows the intake to “breathe in” cooler air from outside.
How It Works:
  • By taking in cooler air, the intake charge can be combined with more fuel than it can with warmer air.
  • More fuel in the intake charge helps the combustion cycle produce more power — and Mustang owners always appreciate more power.
  • GT models feature an induction sound tube centrally located behind the instrument panel that allows the natural sound from under the hood to be heard inside the cockpit.
Key Benefit:
  • A more balanced sound.

Plasma Transferred Wire Arc (PTWA) Cylinder Liner Technology

What It Is:
  • A Ford-patented cylinder liner coating process that applies a 150-micron composite coating containing nanoparticles on the internal surfaces of the engine cylinder bores.
  • Replaces the cast-iron cylinder liners typically used in aluminum engine blocks.
How It Works:
  • The PTWA process uses air and electricity to create a 35,000° F plasma jet, which melts a steel wire that’s fed into a rotating spray gun.
  • Using atomized air, the melted steel is applied to the cylinder bore surfaces.
  • The cylinder bore surfaces have been specially machined to receive the coating.
  • During the process of melting and being applied to the cylinder bore surface, the steel oxidizes, creating a composite consisting of iron and iron oxide.
Why PTWA Is Important:
  • Offers improved performance and durability compared to more typical iron cylinder liners.
  • Helps reduce friction between the cylinder wall and the piston rings.
  • Helps lower heat transfer.
  • Provides an approximate 8.5-lb. weight savings over typical iron-sleeved aluminum block.

What PTWA Means to Potential Buyers:

Overall lighter weight of the engine helps improve fuel economy and performance without a trade-off in reliability and durability.

Engine Durability

  • Main bearing bulkhead widths and nodular iron cross-bolted main bearing caps for extreme use.
  • Deep-sump oil pan capacity of 10 quarts with oil filter.
