Engine Technologies

Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shutoff (ADFSO)

Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shutoff (ADFSO) deactivates the fuel injectors when the vehicle is decelerating or coasting while maintaining normal engine operation. This system promotes efficiency by reducing fuel consumption during these periods.

System Details:

Automatic Operation:

The system functions without any input from the driver.

Transmission Integration:

Uses the transmission to keep the engine running at low operating levels whenever possible.

Seamless Transition:

Normal fuel delivery resumes when the vehicle reaches a low speed or when the driver accelerates.

Optimized Drivability:

Maintains excellent drivability through sophisticated software integration with powertrain operation.

Fail-Safe Engine Cooling System

The Fail-Safe Engine Cooling System is designed to help protect the engine from potential damage due to the loss of coolant, allowing the driver to travel a short distance to obtain service or reach a service facility.

More Details:

Operation Mode:

If the engine overheats, it switches from normal all-cylinder operation to alternating-cylinder operation.

Cooling Function:

The non-powered cylinders act as air pumps to help cool the powered cylinders.

Continued Operation:

The vehicle will continue to operate with limited engine power, and the air conditioning system will be disabled.

Driving Limits:

Driving distance is limited by factors such as vehicle load, outside temperature, and road conditions.

Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor

The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor calculates oil change service intervals based on actual vehicle use, operating conditions, and time since the last oil service.

System Details:

Service Notifications:

A message appears in the Information Display indicating when it’s time for an oil change.

Remaining Oil Life Indications:

"CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON" appears when engine oil life remaining is 10% or less; "ENGINE OIL CHANGE DUE" or "OIL CHANGE REQUIRED" appears when oil life reaches 0%.

Service Guidelines:

The oil change should be performed within two weeks or 500 miles of the "ENGINE OIL CHANGE DUE" or "OIL CHANGE REQUIRED" message appearing.

Accelerated Intervals:

Conditions such as towing, short-distance driving, extended idle duration, and driving in extreme temperatures can accelerate oil change intervals.

Monitor Reset:

The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor must be reset after each oil change.

Warranty Note:

Failure to perform scheduled maintenance as specified in the Scheduled Maintenance Guide may invalidate warranty coverage on parts affected by lack of maintenance.

Port Fuel and Direct-Injection (PFDI) Fuel System

What PFDI Is and How It Works:

Dual-Delivery System

Combines port fuel injection (PFI) and gasoline direct-injection (GDI) into a single fuel system with two fuel injectors per cylinder.

Injector Locations

One injector delivers fuel into each intake port (port injection), and one is located inside the combustion chamber (direct injection) to deliver precise fuel spray.

Balanced Operation

These injectors work together to balance power output, efficiency, and emissions.

Solenoid-Controlled High-Pressure Injectors

Allow for a high engine compression ratio, enhancing performance.

Electronic Control System

Varies the timing and intensity of fuel delivery according to the engine's operating conditions.

PFDI in Action:

Idle and Low-Power Demands

The engine operates using PFI for efficiency and emissions, with GDI high-pressure fuel pump and injectors turned off for less noise.

Increased Power Demands

The engine transitions from PFI to GDI operation as power demand increases.

High-Power Demands

Uses GDI to increase output by precisely controlling the delivery of high-pressure fuel directly into the combustion chamber, while minimizing PFI usage.

Importance to F-150:

Key Technology

Behind the remarkable power and operating efficiency generated by the F-150 engine lineup.

Torque Curve

The combination of port fuel injection, direct-injection, and turbocharging allows EcoBoost engines to deliver a broad and flat torque curve, essential for towing or hauling heavy loads.

Smart Charging Alternator

A smart charging alternator is a standard feature that controls charging system voltage during vehicle acceleration and deceleration, enhancing efficiency.

More Details:

Charging Process:

An alternator provides charging via a pulley and belt operated by the engine, with more torque applied as more current is required.

Efficiency Optimization:

Decreases alternator output during vehicle acceleration and increases output during braking or deceleration.

Fuel Savings:

Reduces additional engine accessory belt load to energize the battery, resulting in less fuel consumption.

System Communication:

Works with the Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shutoff (ADFSO) system to ensure the battery is adequately charged.
