Key Features

Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shutoff (ADFSO)

Aggressive deceleration fuel shutoff (ADFSO) deactivates the fuel injectors when the vehicle is decelerating or coasting while maintaining normal engine operation, promoting efficiency.

System Details:

  • Automatic Operation - No interaction required from the driver.
  • Transmission Utilization - Keeps the engine running at low operating levels whenever possible.
  • Fuel Resumption - Normal fuel delivery resumes when the vehicle reaches a low speed or when the driver accelerates.
  • Driveability - Maintains excellent driveability through software integration with powertrain operation.

EcoBoost Intercooler

The EcoBoost intercooler, included with all EcoBoost engines and the 3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6, removes heat generated by the twin turbochargers compressing the incoming air charge before entering the engine intake system.

System Details:

  • Location - Typically situated at the front of the vehicle within the airstream for optimal cooling.
  • Function - Ambient air flows over the outer plates and fins, cooling the charge air inside the intercooler, resulting in a cooler, denser intake charge that boosts engine torque and horsepower.
  • Principle - Works similarly to a radiator, but cools air instead of water.

EcoBoost Twin Turbochargers

A turbocharger uses exhaust-gas-driven turbines to drive an air compressor, pressurizing air into the engine to create "boost." Twin turbochargers use two smaller turbochargers, enabling the engine to reach peak power faster than a single large turbocharger.

System Details:

  • Exhaust Energy Utilization - Uses otherwise wasted exhaust energy to spin a turbine wheel.
  • Peak Boost - Achieved sooner with twin turbochargers compared to a single large turbocharger.
  • Key Features:
  • Electrically Activated Wastegates - Enhance operating efficiency.
  • Lightweight Turbine Wheels - Improve responsiveness.
  • High-Temperature Super Alloy - Mar-M-247 developed by the aerospace industry for durability.

Fail-Safe Engine Cooling System

The Fail-Safe Engine Cooling System helps protect the engine from potential damage due to coolant loss, allowing the driver to travel a short distance to obtain service.

System Details:

  • Overheating Response - Switches from normal all-cylinder operation to alternating-cylinder operation.
  • Air Pumping - Non-powered cylinders act as air pumps to help cool the powered cylinders.
  • Limited Operation - Vehicle continues to operate with limited engine power and disabled air conditioning.
  • Driving Distance - Limited by factors such as vehicle load, outside temperature, and road conditions.

Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor

The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor calculates oil change service intervals based on actual vehicle use, operating conditions, and time since the last oil service.

System Details:

  • Oil Change Alerts - Messages appear in the Information Display when it’s time for an oil change.
  • "Change Engine Oil Soon" - Appears when engine oil life remaining is 10% or less.
  • "Engine Oil Change Due" or "Oil Change Required" - Appears when oil life reaches 0%.
  • Oil Change Timing - Should be performed within two weeks or 500 miles of the alert message.
  • Accelerating Conditions - Towing, short-distance driving, extended idling, and extreme temperatures can accelerate oil change intervals.
  • Monitor Reset - Must be reset after each oil change.
  • Maintenance Compliance - Failure to perform scheduled maintenance may invalidate warranty coverage.

Port Fuel and Direct-Injection (PFDI) Fuel System

A dual-delivery fuel system combining port fuel injection (PFI) and gasoline direct-injection (GDI) into a single system with two fuel injectors per cylinder.

System Details:

  • Port Fuel Injection (PFI) - Injectors mounted to the intake runner of each cylinder for idle smoothness.
  • Gasoline Direct-Injection (GDI) - High-pressurized fuel metered directly into the combustion chamber for performance boosts.
  • Dual-Injector Operation - Injectors work together to balance power output, efficiency, and emissions.
  • High-Pressure Injectors - Allow for a high engine compression ratio, improving performance and reducing fuel consumption.
  • Electronic Control System - Varies fuel delivery timing and intensity according to operating conditions.

Smart Charging Alternator

A smart charging alternator controls charging system voltage during vehicle acceleration and deceleration, enhancing efficiency.

System Details:

  • Charging Process - Alternator provides charging via a pulley and belt operated by the engine, exerting mechanical load as current is required.
  • Efficiency Optimization - Decreases alternator output during acceleration and increases output during braking or deceleration.
  • Fuel Savings - Reduces additional engine accessory belt load, resulting in less fuel consumption.
  • System Communication - Works with the Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shutoff (ADFSO) system to ensure the battery is adequately charged.
