Engine Technologies

Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shutoff (ADFSO)

Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shutoff (ADFSO) deactivates the fuel injectors when the vehicle is decelerating or coasting while maintaining normal engine operation. This system promotes efficiency by reducing fuel consumption during these periods.

System Details:

  • The system is automatic and requires no interaction from the driver.
  • Uses the transmission to keep the engine running at low operating levels whenever possible.
  • Normal fuel delivery resumes when the vehicle reaches a low speed or when the driver accelerates.
  • Excellent drivability is maintained by software that integrates this technology with powertrain operation.

Fail-Safe Engine Cooling System

The Fail-Safe Engine Cooling System is designed to help protect the engine from potential damage due to the loss of coolant, allowing the driver to travel a short distance to obtain service or reach a service facility.

More Details:

  • If the engine overheats, it will switch from normal all-cylinder operation to alternating-cylinder operation.
  • The non-powered cylinders act as air pumps to help cool the powered cylinders.
  • The vehicle will continue to operate with limited engine power, and the air conditioning system will be disabled.
  • Driving distance is limited by factors such as vehicle load, outside temperature, and road conditions.

Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor

The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor calculates oil change service intervals based on actual vehicle use, operating conditions, and time since the last oil service.

System Details:

  • A message will appear in the Information Display indicating when it’s time for an oil change.
  • "CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON" will appear when engine oil life remaining is 10% or less.
  • "ENGINE OIL CHANGE DUE" or "OIL CHANGE REQUIRED" will appear when oil life reaches 0%.
  • The oil change should be performed within two weeks or 500 miles of the "ENGINE OIL CHANGE DUE" or "OIL CHANGE REQUIRED" message appearing.
  • Conditions that could accelerate an oil change interval include towing, short-distance driving, extended idle duration, and driving in extreme temperatures.
  • The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor must be reset after each oil change.
  • Failure to perform scheduled maintenance as specified in the Scheduled Maintenance Guide may invalidate warranty coverage on parts affected by the lack of maintenance.

Port Fuel and Direct-Injection (PFDI) Fuel System

The Port Fuel and Direct-Injection (PFDI) fuel system combines port fuel injection (PFI) and gasoline direct-injection (GDI) into a single fuel system with two fuel injectors per cylinder. This system enhances power output, efficiency, and emissions control.

What PFDI Is and How It Works:

  • Port Fuel Injection (PFI): An injector is mounted to the intake runner of each cylinder just before the intake valves, ideal for idle smoothness and low-power demands.
  • Gasoline Direct-Injection (GDI): High-pressurized fuel is precisely metered directly into the combustion chamber for a boost in performance when needed most, also helping to cool the combustion chamber.
  • PFDI in Action:
    • At idle and under low-power demands, the engine operates using PFI for efficiency and emissions.
    • As power demand increases, the engine transitions from PFI to GDI operation.
    • Under high-power demands, the engine uses GDI to increase output while minimizing PFI usage.

Smart Charging Alternator

A smart charging alternator is a standard feature that controls charging system voltage during vehicle acceleration and deceleration, enhancing efficiency.

More Details:

  • An alternator provides charging via a pulley and belt operated by the engine. The more current required, the more torque is applied.
  • Smart charging decreases alternator output during vehicle acceleration and increases output during braking or deceleration.
  • Since there is no additional engine accessory belt load to energize the battery, less fuel is used by the engine.
  • Communicates with the Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shutoff (ADFSO) system to ensure the battery is adequately charged.
