In fact, you'll find several beautiful hiking trails right in the vicinity of Clinton Township, whether you prefer a short trek or a full-day journey. more Tomlinson Arboretum Located right in Clinton Township, this site has a multi-use path that wanders through 24 acres of native wildflowers, shrubs, and trees. Guests can enjoy the changing landscape over time as these plants go through their annual lifecycle and attract native wildlife species. You can also purchase a memorial tree for a family member at the Tomlinson Arboretum. Canal Park This park in Clinton Township spans more than 16 acres on Clinton River Road. Here, you'll find the trailhead to the Don Green Nature Trail, which allows you to hike the 2.7-mile route to Budd Park. The forested trail features wood-chip terrain and welcomes leashed dogs. When you arrive at Budd, you'll find another nature trail along with playground equipment, soccer fields, sand volleyball courts, and picnic pavilions with grills. Six Rivers Land Conservancy This expansive land trust protects forested land in Macomb, Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair, and Oakland Counties, including several nature preserves with miles of trails to explore. Some of our favorite spots in this area are in Anchor Bay Woods Preserve, just a short drive from Clinton Township in New Baltimore and one of the newest tracts protected by Six Rivers. Stroll through more than 171 acres of the largest wetland forest in Michigan, home to dozens of threatened and endangered reptile species and hundreds of native birds. Hikers should also visit East Pond Creek Preserve, about a 30-minute drive from Clinton Township in Bruce Township. This 20-acre wetland location traverses a conifer swamp filled with northern white cedar. Belle Isle Conservancy If you don't mind a drive to Detroit, Belle Isle gives you the chance to explore an honest-to-goodness island without leaving Michigan. On this 982-acre park site, you'll find miles of nature trails through this unique landscape. You can also take to the paved bike trails or rent a kayak to paddle around the Detroit River and surrounding canals. Well worth a day trip, the island also features historic sites, museums, an aquarium, fishing, tennis, recreational rowing programs, and so much more. Macomb Orchard Trail This 24-mile multi-use path uses old rail lines to connect Shelby Township with Richmond and the towns along the way. Eventually, the Michigan rail-to-trail project will connect the Macomb Orchard Trail with more than 180 miles of trails throughout the southeast part of the state. Paved along its entire length, this section passes through grassy valleys offering glimpses of farms, bridges, animals, and other bucolic sights. This trail is open from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset and allows leashed pets only.  You'll find restrooms, picnic pavilions, parking facilities, and other amenities at several points along the way. Detroit-Style Deep Dish Pizza New York-style pizza can’t beat Detroit’s very own deep-dish, Sicilian-style square pizza. Cloverleaf Pizza’s founder created the original Detroit-style pizza in 1946.  They still serve this Detroit iconic food, which is baked in a steel pan that was an original container for car parts. Detroit deep-dish also uses only the finest brick cheese to top this square pizza, and when you try this signature classic, you’ll understand why nothing beats it. more Boston Cooler With Vernors Ginger Ale Don't let the name fool you. The Boston Cooler is Detroit's very own, and it's actually named after Boston Boulevard in downtown Detroit. This local favorite is made from Vernors, Detroit's very own ginger ale, and vanilla ice cream. Vernors goes back a long time and is one of America's oldest soft drinks. Detroit local James Vernor came up with this drink in 1866, and it's been a favorite ever since. Top it with ice cream, though, and you have something truly unique to Detroit. Double-Baked Rye Bread Rye bread is a staple of many kosher bakeries and delis around the country, but none of them have what Detroit has: double-baked rye. Jack Goldberg was the mastermind behind the double-baking technique in the 1950s when he owned Stage & Co., a deli that served meats, sandwiches, and other items. The double-baking process involved baking the rye loaves until they were almost fully baked. Then, Mr. Goldberg would let the loaves bake for another 20 minutes before serving the deli lunch rush. This made the rye hold up to the piles of corned beef Detroiters are known to stack on their sandwiches. Zip Sauce If you haven't topped your gyro, sandwiches, or steaks with Detroit's famous Zip sauce, you haven't really lived. Zip sauce became a thing back in the 1930s when Lelli's Inn, a local Italian steakhouse, started serving a mixture of au jus, butter, Worcestershire sauce, and a blend of spices. The original Lelli's Inn burned down some time ago. If you want to sample this Detroit original, head to Lelli's new location in Auburn Hills. You'll be thankful you did. Superman Ice Cream Nobody does a Superman ice cream quite like Detroit. Named after the superhero, this ice cream features swirls of red, blue, and yellow ice cream. It's rumored to have come to fruition at Stroh's Ice Cream Plant, where factory workers are credited with inventing this wild flavor using Blue Moon ice cream. You may find it all over now, but it won't be exactly like Detroit's own original. No matter what you're in the mood for, Detroit's own unique flavors offer something for everyone. Clinton Township is filled with nearly 300 years of history. From abandoned settlements to wartime battles, there are many more surprising facts to learn about the area. Here's a quick history of Clinton Township. The Moravian Settlement Was the First in the Area Before Clinton Township and Macomb County were a thing, the Moravian Settlement called the area home. The Moravians were from Saxony, Germany, and came to America in the early 1700s. Their missionaries built the Moravian Church and preached to the Native American inhabitants as well as their German brethren. When the British came upon the area that would grow into Clinton Township, they discovered remnants of this settlement. more Clinton Township Used to Be Larger One interesting fact about Clinton Township is its size. Today, Clinton Township encompasses a much smaller area than it did back in 1827. Back then, Clinton Township also included what would become Warren Township and Erin Township. The township may not have had as many residents living there as there are today, but the actual city limits were much wider. The British Employed Native Americans From the Area During the War of 1812 During the War of 1812 when the British attempted to retake control of America, Native Americans proved valuable allies in their revenge against the American soldiers. The British motivated the Native Americans to join their cause by offering them $5 for every enemy captured in battle. Clinton Township Was Named After the Clinton River During the century of immigration and battles over the American territories, Clinton Township existed under several different names. At first, it was the site of the Moravian Settlement, eventually becoming Frederick. When Michigan became a state in 1837, legislators renamed the village Clinton Township after the Clinton River. This happened during the very first meeting of Michigan's state legislator. Japanese-Americans Relocated to Clinton Township During World War II During the second world war in 1943, Paul Weiss (a proprietor for Mount Clemens Rose Gardens) implored the United States government to give permission for Japanese-Americans to relocate to the area. These citizens were those who were held in the internment camps at the time, and when they relocated to Clinton Township, they became invaluable workers for the Rose Gardens. They even formed a baseball team and went on to win the league championship in 1947. Clinton Township Is the Largest Township in Michigan Although the largest township in Michigan by land area is McMillan Township (about 588 square miles), Clinton Township is the most populous of Michigan's townships. In July 2019, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated around 100,471 residents living in Clinton Township, making it the most populated township in Michigan. Lorenzo Cultural Center The Albert J. Lorenzo Cultural Center opened in 2006, and it has a variety of exhibits on history, modern culture, science, literature, and art. The exhibits change often, so you can visit frequently and keep learning new things. Touring them usually takes around an hour, and you can also see free lectures and films. Past exhibits have included: "Becoming Michigan: From Revolution to Statehood," "101 People Places and Things That Made Michigan," "Tall Tales and Folklore: Exploring Michigan's Traditional Stories," and "More Than A Game: How Sports Shape Culture." There are several restaurants nearby, and the Lorenzo Cultural Center sometimes gives visitors complimentary souvenirs. He lived in the house for many decades, and the Macomb County Historical Society transformed it into a museum and saved it from demolition in 1976. The staff at the house teaches people about how individuals lived in the late Victorian era. You can see lots of antique artifacts, as well as rotating exhibits, and you can take a guided tour from March through December on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's also open on the first Sunday of every month from 1 to 4 p.m. The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation This museum focuses on America's greatest minds.
