Ford F-150 in Clinton TownshipIf you’re looking for a little bit of Ford history, this list is for you. With many popular and best-selling models over the years, Ford holds its place as one of the most-loved car manufacturers in the United States. Here are the most popular Ford models sold over the years.

Ford F-Series Pickup Trucks

The Ford F-Series holds the top spot as Ford’s best-selling model, with over 26 million auto sales in the United States alone since 1977. Ford first introduced the F-Series line of pickups back in 1948, and today, the F-Series is in its thirteenth generation. The F-150 holds the spot as the most-loved pickup truck in the U.S. with nearly 900,000 sales in the 2019 model year. The F-150 debuted in 1975 and still holds the top spot in American pickup truck sales at 33 million sales worldwide.

Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang debuted in 1962 as an affordable and fun sports coupe. Designated the “pony car” of America, the Mustang was recently awarded two global sales crowns, becoming the best-selling sports car in the world. The Mustang has held its spot as the best-selling sports car in the U.S. for the past 50 years. Not only is the Mustang America’s most-loved sports car, but it’s also a popular choice in its class in Germany with a 33% increase in sales, Poland with nearly a 50% sales increase, and in France, where the Mustang’s sales nearly doubled since 2019.

Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer debuted in 1991 and quickly became one of the most popular SUVs in the United States. Its original first-generation style mimicked its iconic predecessor, the Ford Bronco II, as a mid-size SUV. In 2011, Ford upgraded the Explorer into a new class: a full-size crossover SUV. The Explorer is now in its fifth generation and has sold over 7 million units to date.

Ford Taurus

Even though Ford discontinued production of the Taurus back in 2018, this was a vehicle that rose to popularity in America pretty quickly when it first debuted. The Taurus came about as a replacement for the highly popular LTD sedan when Ford stopped production on that long-time model in 1986. The Taurus gave the average driver room, efficiency, and reliability, and it saw nearly 8 million sales when Ford stopped production in 2018.

Ford LTD

The Ford LTD was one of the most popular full-size sedans of its day. Ford debuted this model back in 1964 then redesigned the LTD as a mid-size sedan in early 1982. During the LTD’s production, Ford saw over 5 million sales of this model before it was discontinued and replaced by the Taurus. In its 22 years of production, the LTD was one of Ford’s most popular sedans.

These five Ford models show just how popular Ford is in the world of auto manufacturing. Even though Ford is focusing more on crossovers, SUVs, and pickups, there are many new Ford models that are proving to be as well-loved and popular as some of the classics on this list.
